The 5-Axis CNC Miller is responsible for programming, setting, operating, and maintaining 5-axis CNC milling machines to produce high-precision components. This role ensures parts are manufactured to strict quality standards while optimising machining strategies, tooling selection, and cycle times.

  • Set up and operate 5-axis CNC milling machines, including tooling, fixtures, work holding, probes, and offsets.
  • Prepare machines for production runs, including loading programs, verifying tool libraries, and confirming setup sheets.
  • Perform first-off inspections and maintain consistent, high-quality output throughout the run.
  • Create, edit, and optimise CNC programs using CAM software (e.g., Solid Cam, Cloud.nc Fusion, etc.) or direct G-code editing.
  • Adjust toolpaths, speeds, feeds, and machining strategies to improve accuracy and efficiency.
  • Troubleshoot program-related issues in simultaneous and positional 5-axis machining.
  • Select appropriate tooling, holders, and cutting strategies based on component and material requirements.
  • Monitor tool wear and replace tooling to maintain dimensional accuracy and surface finish.
  • Identify opportunities for process improvement, cycle time reduction, and enhanced tool life.
  • Conduct in-process and final inspections using micrometres, verniers, height gauges, bore gauges, and other precision equipment.
  • Ensure parts meet drawing specifications, GD&T requirements, and customer quality standards.
  • Complete inspection documentation and maintain traceability records as required.
  • Diagnose machining issues such as chatter, dimensional variance, poor surface finish, or tool failures.
  • Perform routine preventative maintenance and report mechanical, spindle, or control issues.
  • Support continuous improvement initiatives and contribute to problem-solving activities.
  • Manage multiple machines where required to maintain workflow and productivity.
  • Support lights-out / unattended machining through reliable setups and tool monitoring.
  • Maintain accurate production logs and follow established manufacturing processes.
  • Follow all safety procedures when working with high-speed rotating machinery and cutting fluids.
  • Ensure safe handling of work holding, heavy components, and sharp tooling.
  • Maintain compliance with company standards and relevant industry certifications (ISO9001, AS9100, medical, etc.).
  • 3+ years of experience in CNC milling, with strong hands-on experience in 5-axis machining (Brother, Matsurra, DMG.).
  • Skilled in CAM programming and/or G-code editing.
  • Ability to read and interpret detailed engineering drawings and GD&T.
  • Experience machining materials such as stainless steel, aluminium, titanium, and engineering alloys.
  • Excellent attention to detail and manual dexterity.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.
  • Competency in precision measurement and quality control practices.
  • Ability to work independently or collaboratively within a machining team.
  • Understanding of machining workflows and lean manufacturing principles (preferred).
  • Full-time position in a modern machine shop environment.
  • May require standing for long periods and handling materials/tools within defined weight limits.
  • Overtime or shift work may be required to meet production deadlines.
